Are Ukrainian Driving Licences Valid in Germany and When Do They Need to Be Exchanged?
Are Ukrainian driving licences valid in Germany, and for how long? 🚗 When is an exchange required, and which documents do you need to apply?
After moving into accommodation in Germany, you need to find out when and where to register your address. Start by speaking to whoever provides your accommodation: registration usually requires confirmation that you have actually moved in, not just a tenancy agreement. If your employer arranges a room or flat for you, check who will issue this document before you move.
Anmeldung is the registration of the address where you actually live. In everyday speech, it is simply called address registration. As a general rule, you need to register your address within two weeks of moving in. The period starts on the day you actually move in, not when you sign the agreement or cross the border.
Whether you can live in Germany without registering your address depends on your circumstances. For example, if you normally live abroad, do not yet have a registered address in Germany and are only staying temporarily, you generally become required to register after three months. That does not mean every newcomer can wait three months. If you have moved to Germany to live there or have moved into a reception centre or other accommodation assigned to you, check the registration procedure straight away.
Address registration for Ukrainians in Germany and applying for temporary protection are separate procedures. The first confirms your address; the second concerns your residence status. If you are interested in working in Germany, check your right to work separately. Proof of address may be needed when you start a job, but it does not in itself give you the right to work.
Before your appointment, open the relevant service page on your city’s website. It will tell you which documents you need for your situation. For an in-person appointment, you will usually need:
The owner of the flat is not necessarily the person who issues the confirmation. If you are subletting, it may be the main tenant who provided your room. If a company arranges your accommodation, ask who actually provides it and who is authorised to sign the confirmation. Check the address, the move-in date and the names of everyone you are registering.
Do not assume that a tenancy agreement can replace the confirmation. The agreement sets out the terms of the tenancy, while the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung confirms that you have already moved in. If the accommodation provider refuses to issue it, or you do not receive it in time, notify the registration authority without delay. Do not pay to register at an address where you do not live.
To find out how to register a specific address in Germany, look for the Wohnsitz anmelden service on the city’s website. The local office responsible for registration may be called Bürgeramt, Bürgerbüro or Einwohnermeldeamt. Check whether you need an appointment, which offices accept applications and whether online registration is available in your situation.
If there are no appointments available, do not just wait. Contact the authority and ask how to submit your application on time. If the city’s website lets you choose another office, check availability there too. Keep the correspondence or your appointment confirmation. Booking an appointment does not mean your address has been registered.
Check that your first and last names on the form match your passport. Check the move-in date against the confirmation from your accommodation provider. If you are moving with children and only one parent will attend the appointment, find out in advance whether you need the other parent’s consent or any additional documents.
Once your address is registered, you will receive confirmation known as a Meldebestätigung or Anmeldebestätigung. Check your address and personal details straight away. Keep the document and a copy: you may need it to open a bank account or when corresponding with authorities.
If you move to another flat in Germany, register your new address. This procedure is often called Ummeldung. When you move directly from one flat to another, you do not need to deregister from your previous address separately. Get a new move-in confirmation for your new accommodation.
Abmeldung is required if you move out and do not move to another address in Germany. A typical example is moving abroad permanently. You can apply no earlier than one week before moving out and no later than two weeks afterwards. If you are going on holiday and keeping your accommodation, the trip itself is not a reason to deregister.
It is easiest to check the registration requirements before moving in. Find out who will issue the confirmation, identify the right office and check how to book an appointment. That way, you will not waste time attending an appointment without all the documents you need.
